It has been a while since I posted anything here. The last few months have mostly been consumed by the 3 bands I play for in the UK - EPIC, Eaglesque + Do Wah Diddy. I've been working on solo material here and there though and now I'm ready to release some tracks over the next few months. Now maybe some of you will remember that a few years ago I put a few demo songs on MySpace for free download - "The Free Download EP." It was only available for a limited time, just to enable me to assess peoples reactions to my singing and songwriting. There was a track on it called "Don't Let It Slip Away," which got a lot of great feedback so I decided to re-record it recently in "Mothership Studios." I shortend the name to "Slip Away," and completely re-recorded it with a slightly different arrangement. The single version of the song will be released for download only on 1st December 2010 on CDBaby and all the usual download sites. More releases to talk about soon!
I was recently offered a new endorsement deal with Fret-King basses. I have stated many times that I think it's despicable when artists endorse an instrument they don't actually use. This often happens and is to do with the free advertising one can generate from putting one's name to a product. I only use equipment that I would spend my own money on, equipment that I'm prepared to use consistently both live and in the studio. I was dubious at first, having never played them, but having tried them out I have decided to "sign-up." Fret-King basses are a very nice combination of classic sounds and modern build quality. They are considerably cheaper than any equivalent instrument. They are of a very professional standard and I recommend them very highly. I am currently using a Perception and a Ventura. Here are some links to various news announcements etc. on the web regarding me putting my name to the Fret-Kings, and links where you can find out further details regarding the instruments.

Having played bass with former Sabbath front man Tony Martin for the past few years, amongst other things, Jamie Mallender releases his first solo album 'Return to Bass.' This instrumental album features Jamie exculusively and is something which I would probably recommend for connoisseurs and musos rather than the man on the street. That's in no way a criticism, more of a reflection on the standard of playing and style of music.
Coming from such a hard rock background (Bailey's Comet, the Tony Martin Band and Zal Cleminson's Oskura) you would pherhaps expect an album from Jamie to be of this genre - not so. The album is a magnificent mix of jazz, rock, blues and all points inbetween. I was reminded at times of Stanley Clarke - one of my first bass loves and a very noticeable influence of Jamie's.
Apparently, the album was a way of Mallender channelling his frustration after the US tour he was scheduled to go on with Tony Martin was cancelled only hours before he was due to leave for the airport, leaving him with no income and no work. His energy wasn't wasted. High points of the album for me are 'The Bass Player Answers Back', which has a Zappa-esque feel in parts, but then almost Jethro Tull-ish in others, and the amazing 'Captain Blake Versus the Lion', which is old-school prog with pleanty of keyboard wizardry.
This eclectic mix of styles is an excellent showcase for Mallender's talents, but even though he's shunned commerciality with this release, I hope sales of this little gem will spur him on to bigger and better things.

Quick one chaps - check out the link above for a new interview with me regarding "Return To Bass."
Well, it's a very exciting time for me! I've finally finished and released my solo album, and I'm in the middle of trying to sort out some publicity to make people aware that it's out there. Joe Siegler has been good enough to post me a news bulletin on the Sabbath site, and Edward Baggett is constantly helping me out with promotional issues. A special mention has to go to Adrian Bece for providing me with excellent artwork at the drop of a hat, and for being a good supportive friend.
I am very proud of the album. I like it. It is the sort of record I would buy. I'm not saying it's better or worse than anyone else's album. But it's creatively very original and it was made purely to please my taste. I love all kinds of music and the album reflects this. It fuses the heavy riffs I'm known for with lots of other styles.
CDBaby are handling sales for me. They describe the album as, "A bass guitar oriented fusion, crossover, progressive, instrumental album featuring a mishmash of genres, time changes and mood swings with a loose Sci-Fi B-Movie feel - more musical journey than virtuoso showcase, nevertheless displaying impressive chops."
Jamie, " In making "Return To Bass" I have ignored every formula in the book, every critic with an opinion of any kind and every opportunity to make it more commercially accessible. I have skipped from one genre to another and spliced musical styles together, always avoiding the obvious route. This album was not written to please anyone but me. Each track expresses how I felt at the time of recording, and goes on a musical journey that I enjoyed taking. It was not recorded to make a lot of money, or to make me famous. This album is my one finger answer to a music industry that needs a good old shake by the throat, and to all people who are happy to be spoon-fed manufactured music."All instruments on "Return To Bass" are played by Jamie himself.

Right guys,
I've decided the video is going to be for "The Bass Player Answers Back." That and Layla's Funk got the most positive feedack, but "Bass Player" lends itself to visual ideas better. The actual shooting will commence within the next few days.
I've finished work on the "Return To Bass" album and Adrian Beece has been kind enough to contribute some excellent artwork for it. My website www.jamiemallender.co.uk has been updated with finished versions of some of the tracks for you to hear, as has My Facebook and MySpace.
Please check 'em out and let me know what you think.
Regards,
Jamie
Ok. Thank you for giving me this page, and thank you to those of you who have checked it out. I'm very happy to hear from you guys here, at my e-mail address - jamiemal@hotmail.co.uk or on my website. www.jamiemallender.co.uk
I only have a couple of minutes, so my 1st post will be brief. I've been working on some solo instrumental material for a little while. I realized that the best way to get more attention to it was for it to be on YouTube. So I made a couple of cheapo slide-show videos and posted them. It has worked well, but really I need something much more professional than that. I'm about to make a video to accompany one of my tracks. So if you guys want to check out my website, facebook or myspace and have a listen and let me know which track you think deserves a video - I would be very grateful.
Best Regards,
Jamie Mallender
